Bruce A. McKee was born at Gettysburg, Ohio, November 19, 1860, and died January 3, 1939 at the home of his son in Topeka. He came to Kansas with his parents on December 24, 1878, locating on the farm which has been his home and still is the home of the family. Mr. McKee, who was always active in community life, holding offices of trust in various things. He was with the Neese store nine years and a leader in everything for the good of his community. He was president and secretary of the telephone company a number of years, member of the school board 15 years, township trustee 9 years, a member of M.W.A. since 1898, a charter member of the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Lodges, and also a member of Ridgeway A. F. & A. M. Lodge since 1918. He was married to Ida Zirkle, January 22, 1896. One son J. W. McKee, one daughter, Mrs. Clarence Coonis, two grandsons, two sister, Mrs. Emma Cummings of Topeka, and Miss Maggie McKee of Denver, Colorado, two brothers, Elmer W. McKee of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and W. I. McKee of De Ridder, La., survive him.
Mr. McKee was a member of the Presbyterian church but he and his family always attended Methodist church and took active part.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in Richland, by Rev. C. W. Werner of the Oakland Methodist church of Topeka on Thursday, January 5. Mrs. August Scheetz of Topeka and Roland McDowell accompanied by Bernice Cole sang "Face to Face." "Lead Kindly Light," and "I Came to the Garden Alone."
The casket bearers were: Wm. Miller, Chas. Allbaugh, W.D. Allen, Chas Gerish, Merton Woodward, and Fred Van Nice.
Mr. McKee was a highly respected citizen which was verified by the large number of friends present at the last rites as well as many floral tributes. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.
Relatives and friends attending the funeral services were: E. H. Zirkle, Kansas City, Mo.; E. U. McKee, Council Bluffs, Iowa; Bruce Cummings, Kansas City, Mo.; Bruce E. McKee, Lawrence; Mrs. Emma Cummings and Daughter Miss Margaret, Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Zirkle, Burlingame; from Topeka were: Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Sage, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Zirkle, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Zirkle, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Coe, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Carrier, Frank Spiker; Mr and Mrs. Elmer Zirkle; Auburn; and Mr. and Mrs. Bailey Seybold, and Mr. and Mrs. Matt Woodhead of McLouth.
